Overview of Changing your Benefits of Life Events

When a life event such as the addition of a new family member, a change in marital status or your spouse’s employment occurs, you may be eligible to change your benefits.


  1. Select the Benefits application on your Workday homepage.

  2. Under the Change options, select Benefits.

  3. Benefit Event Type: Choose your life event.

  4. Benefit Event Date: Select the effective date for this change.

  5. Attach any documents as proof of your life event. You must attach documentation if selecting one of the following life events: Birth / Adoption of Child, Divorce, Gain / Loss of Coverage from Another Source, Marriage. You may have to scan the documentation first for it to be available for attaching in Workday.

  6. Click Submit.

  7. Your request will route to Emerson HR for review of your documentation and approval. If you are updating your benefits due to a change in your Health Spending Account (HSA) or beneficiary, you will be prompted automatically to update those items.

  8. After HR reviews your request and approves, you will receive a task in your Workday inbox to update your benefits.

  9. Proceed through the steps in the inbox task of updating your benefits as needed. Click the Next button at the bottom of the page to continue through the steps and click Submit when completed.

    1. If enrolling any dependents into a plan, please see the Enroll Dependent(s) job aid on the steps for doing so.

What Happens Next?

After making changes, your benefits will update on the date you indicated in step 4.
