Professional development encompasses activities that enhance your skills, knowledge and competence. It is a continuous effort of learning and improvement. Professional development activities may include courses, workshops, conferences and certifications. It also includes things such as leading a department meeting for the first time, participating in committee work, mentoring others, and staying informed through industry publications, online resources, and research papers.

Own Your Development
Discuss your interests, goals, and growth opportunities with your manager. Share your successes and where you’d like to improve. Be open, honest, and humble. Some people find it challenging to identify areas for improvement, as if it is a character flaw. Not at all! Even demonstrating the vulnerability of admitting an area that you’d like to improve is a form of growth.
Remember to carve out time for learning and growing opportunities. It can often be overlooked as not always the most immediate priority. Make it a priority when you can. Your current and future self will thank you for it.
